Xenophobia in Greek Art

Xenophobia: a fear and/or hatred of people from other countries or cultures. It is also sometimes referred to as racism or nativism. Xenophobia can manifest itself in various forms, such as verbal or physical attacks, discrimination, or exclusion.

Greek art is a reflection of the culture and values of the ancient Greeks. The Greeks were a largely homogeneous group and had a strong sense of superiority over other civilizations. This sense of superiority was reflected in their art, which often depicted a contrast between the Greeks and other civilizations.

The Pediment of the Parthenon is a prime example of this. The pediment depicts the story of the birth of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and war. The scene is populated by gods, goddesses, and Greek warriors, while any non-Greeks are relegated to the background. This depiction of the story serves to emphasize the power and importance of the Greek gods and people, while also subtly downplaying the importance of any other civilizations.

Centauromachy, a popular motif in Greek art, is another example of xenophobia. The scene depicts a heroic contest between the Greek hero, Theseus, and a group of centaurs. The scene is often used to emphasize the strength of the Greek forces, while also portraying the centaurs as uncivilized and brutish.

In general, Greek art often portrays the Greeks as strong, heroic, and civilized, while other civilizations are often depicted as weaker, barbaric, and uncivilized. The other civilizations that the Greeks knew of, and whose cultures were often denigrated in Greek art, were the Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, and Phoenicians.
